Schottlander created the MANTIS series of lamps in 1951 as a tribute to Alexander Calder. A clever system of counterweights and flexible metal bars is at the heart of Schottlander’s work: a skilled artist, an engineer, and an accomplished handyman, he devised a flexible and strong mechanism for motion. The shade is also unique in its kind.As if suspended in midair, it’s made of aluminum using spinning and chasing techniques that are part of a metalworker’s arsenal, but that he has combined with his sculptor’s eye to create a helical motion.
