Each of 118’s undulating internal layer bears the ghost of the steel cage used in its construction. The molten glass is pushed into the crevices of the cage by air forced into its core. Gravity and heat coax these erratic, multifaceted tendrils to elongate, following the initial shape set by the steel. That cage is cleaned and used to seed another 118 after being sheared off in the last phase.
Each 118 takes shape in reaction to various unpredictable elements, such as the weather outside our workshop, the glassblower’s attitude, and the chemical makeup of the glass, and exists in a multiple of one.
